* * *

Imogen dreamed of mosquito bites.

She opened her eyes, her whole body tingling, as if numb. Someone was sitting on the bed beside her, compact and pale. Big black eyes stared down. Her first thought was How did Stefan unlock my door?

But then her vision adjusted.

When she realized it was Sally on the edge of the mattress, bony fingers clutching Imogen’s hand, Imogen understood that this was still a dream. That was why Imogen couldn’t cry out. Couldn’t pull herself away. Groggy, she remembered the term sleep paralysis from a television documentary she’d watched with her parents.

The tingling sensation moved up her arm, past her elbow, encompassed her shoulder, crept farther. This numbness was disconcerting. She couldn’t even grunt out her annoyance! Stupid nightmare . . .

Ambient light of the night city glowed through her windows. Where Sally had been bone only moments ago, now there was cartilage, blue veins pulsing, whitish nerves spidering across twitching red muscle—new flesh climbing up the skeleton’s arm, filling it in. From the edge of her vision, Imogen was horrified to see the skin on her arm was gone.

She understood: Somehow, Sally was taking her.

Bit by bit.

Imogen watched Sally’s hand become whole—white skin appearing like an elastic costume as it stretched toward the pinkish shoulder. She struggled to scream, to yank herself away. Awake!

Sally’s new skin suit was now at her neck. Muscle and veins and nerves spread across skeletal torso. Imogen’s own body continued to melt away—everything but her bones.

Soon, her own face stared down from Sally’s skull, which was now sprouting ash-blond hair. Two orbs appeared in the sockets, blue irises shining out as Imogen’s vision went dim.

And then black.
